This study determined the radium content of the lavas of the Lassen region. Because there is a wider variety of Tertiary and recent lavas than that of anyother volcano in the Cascade chain, the results here may be applied toward learning the role of radium in igneous differentiation. Specimens were selected according to age (lower Pleistocene/upper Pliocene to lava from 1915) and in composition (basic basalt to acidic dacite). Overall, lavas of the Lassen region are relatively poor in radium compared to previous results from around the world. In both basalts and acidic lavas, there was much less radioactivity than in other volcanoes. There did not seem to be any dependence of radium content on age; even the oldest and youngest flows examined resembled each other in their content of principal oxides and radium content.
