The fauna of the Apostle Islands was surveyed in 1919. It was noted that all mammals captured on the island (with the exception of the bats) were those that are active in the winter. This led to the hypothesis that only winter-active mammals were able to colonize the islands by crossing Lake Superior on the ice or travelling on debris in ice flows.
