Bluestone Scenic River, a tributary of New River, is located in Mercer and Summers counties in southern West Virginia. This report gives the results of a 1992 field survey of the area for rare species and significant natural communities. Nineteen flowering plants and three animals considered rare in the state are reported, including one federally listed threatened plant (Virginia spiraea) and four Category 2 species (butternut, Smoke Hole bergamot, rock skullcap, and Allegheny woodrat). Locations for these occurrences are mapped, and population and habitat data and management suggestions are given. Global and state rarity of each species are noted. No significant natural communities were identified and except for riparian and river channel habitat, no wetlands were seen. National Wetland Inventory maps with revisions based on field observations are included.
