The recent eruption of Mauna Loa

Bishop SE. 1887. The recent eruption of Mauna Loa. Science. 9(213):205-207

Bishop describes the Mauna Loa eruption of 1887. The eruption began on January 16 with a lava fountain in Mokuaweoweo. On January 18, lava broke out on the southwest rift at an altitude above 5,700 ft and reached the sea in 26 hrs. Lava emission ceased on February 1. Rising air, heated by the flow, resulted in the formation of cumulus clouds above the eruption area. The clouds were visible from Honolulu.
