This was an investigation of the extent of recolonization of salt marsh species at the Herring River marsh in Wellfleet, Massachusetts. It establishes a baseline from which further changes may be observed. Increased tidal flow since 1969 has resulted in replacement of the artifically maintained cattail marsh above the dike being replaced by salt marsh species. The distribution of Spartina alterniflora, S. patens, and Typha latifolia was determined. At ten stations, standing crop of S. alterniflora and benthic fauna were sampled. Salinity and tidal flow were measured by John Moody of North Falmouth.
