This shapefile contains boundaries for Recommended Wilderness, Potential Wilderness, and Non-Wilderness in Arches National Park (ARCH), Utah. This dataset is derived from the NPS Official Wilderness Recommendation which was transmitted from the President to Congress on 5/11/1978, but never enacted. The Wilderness Recommendation is based on careful studies of roadless areas, public hearings, and written responses. This dataset has been revised from the official map to adjust buffers along roads and utilities, account for changes to the boundary and land status, and reflect more accurate measurement available through new GIS technology. Land added to the boundary after the 1978 recommendation has not been studied for wilderness. This dataset identifies 56,646.33 acres within ARCH as Recommended Wilderness (61,547 acres in the official 1978 document). This dataset also identifies 8,139.90 acres as Potential Wilderness (8,461 acres in the official document). The remaining 8,607.60 acres were determined to be not suitable for wilderness designation or potential wilderness at this time. The difference in acreage calculations is due to the increased accuracy and associated error of recreating an analog dataset into a digital form using GIS technology.
