This data depicts the blocks used for prescribed fire in Big Bend National Park. The blocks for the Panther Junction and Chisos Basin Developed area were defined in the park's 1994 Wildland Fire Management Plan; the remainder of the blocks have been established by the park's Fire Management Officer. All management ignited prescribed fires, whatever the purpose of the fire, must be contained within predetermined prescribed fire blocks. Fuel Management Blocks serve to facilitate management of prescribed fires, limit their size, and develop boundaries to prevent escape. Fire Management Blocks may be for hazard fuel reduction, research, reclamation and restoration, or other purposes as deemed appropriate. Block boundaries are determined using natural and man-made features that will facilitate containment of management-ignited fires.
