Public lands in and around Dinosaur National Monument, Colorado and Utah were evaluated to identify habitat suitable to support a minimum viable population of bighorn sheep. This dataset identifies areas of POTENTIAL suitable habitat. This data was derived from an analysis of slope (27-85 degrees), distance to water (3.2 km), distance from human use areas, effects of natural and manmade barriers to routine movement, quality of horizontal visibility, and presence of domestic livestock. It should be used with an additional dataset (dino_domestic_sheep.e00) that identifies domestic sheep grazing allotments and areas of concern if located in too close proximity to domestic sheep. A biological panel reviewed the dataset, and based upon their personal knowledge of the area, recommended sites for bighorn sheep restoration or herd supplementation (dino_restoration_sites.e00). These results were printed in an internal NPS report. This was the first of two analyses. The second analysis used a reclassification of the vegetation file where certain areas classified as unsuitable due to dense vegetation (equating to poor horizontal visibility) in this analysis were reanalyzed by the resource management staff and considered suitable in the second analysis (dino_suitable_bighorn_habitat_2.e00)
