This 'Water Body' layer was derived from the National Hydrography Dataset - High Resolution (NHD) (http://nhd.usgs.gov/). The shapefile provides the Geographic Name (when available) and the Hydrographic Code (intermittent or perennial) for the following features: 1) canals and ditches, 2) lakes and ponds, 3) reservoirs, 4) streams and rivers, and 5) swamps and marshes. The "Streams and Rivers" layer contains more detailed information (stored as linear features).
