Transects of Pu`uhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park

Transects were established in Pu`uhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park as part of a (1992-1993) monitoring study of vegetation, plants, birds, mammals, and invertebrates of three National Parks on the leeward side of the island of Hawai`i. A series of transects were systematically placed, crossing the Park from east to west. The transects start on the eastern boundary fenceline; the first begins 50 m from a large corner post near the sewage station reached by the service road from the visitor center parking lot. The first five transects (00, 0, 1, 2, and 3) start at 150 m intervals along the fenceline; Transect 4 is 600 m from Transect 3 and 300 m north of the corner of the Park; and Transect 5 is along the fenced southern Park Boundary. Transects follow an azimuth of 250 degrees from true North. The first four transects are approximately 500 m in length and end at either the unpaved road to Park buildings or the coastal trail. Transect 3 is only 100 m long and ends on the edge of a cliff. Transects 4 and 5 are 200 and 280 m long, and both end at the 1871 trail.
