Red salmon studies at Brooks Lake Biological Field Station, Katmai National Monument, were made to determine the physical, chemical, and biological factors affecting fresh water survival of red salmon. The information gained may be applied to manipulate production to secure optimum utilization of spawning and rearing areas in the Brooks system and to understand red salmon population dynamics in the Bristol Bay region. Included in the red salmon studies were adult red salmon immigrations; spawning grounds; juvenile red salmon outmigration; identity of red salmon spawning stocks; lake resident juvenile salmon; and limnological, climatological, hydrological, and ecological factors. Adult red salmon immigrations were sampled to determine fecundity and potential egg deposition. Spawning ground studies included weir maintenance, trapping, and suveys, including dtermination of the bear-salmon relationships at Hidden Creeek. Several fish collections from various parts of the Naknek River system were identified, and the occurence and distribution of fishes in the system were summarized. Major improvements of the physical facilities at Brooks Lake were also reported.
