This paper notes that in the effort to re-establish natural redwood stands on previously logged areas, experimentation can help in understanding dynamics of both second-growth and old-growth areas. Some management activities may speed the recovery process, estimated according to study results to take centuries if left alone. A tendency for over-representation of Douglas firs in second-growth may be balanced through thinning of young stands, and other methods are suggested for increasing the resemblance to old-growth stands. (The report is concerned with upland, rather than alluvial, stands; it discusses redwood and Douglas fir, but not roles of other associated plants.) Two illustrations show densities of the two major conifers under a range of conditions, and linear regressions of density changes over time. Data from the study may be useful for predictive models.
