The Relative Abundance and Feeding Habits of Juvenile Kingfish (Sciaenidae: Menticirrhus) in a Gulf of Mexico Surf Zone

A study concerned with the feeding habits and food of the Menticirrhus complex (Gulf kingfish (Menticirrhus littoralis), southern kingfish (Menticirrhus americanus), and northern kingfish (Menticirrhus saxatilis)) in the surf zone of Horn Island in the Gulf Islands National Seashore, Florida and Mississippi. Fish collections were made over a 24 hour period at various times in the year. The stomach contents of the fish were identified and analyzed. The results concerning seasonality, diel occurrence, food habits, and dietary overlap for each species is discussed and presented in tabular form.
