These data represent a mean high water shoreline collected for Fire Island National Seashore using Global Positioning System (GPS) technology on August 21, 1995. The receiver used was a hand-held coarse acquisition code unit: model - GeoExplorer, manufactured by Trimble Navigation, Ltd. The raw GPS data were diferentially corrected with GPS reference data provided by the University of Rhode Island Cooperative Extension Base Station. Data were collected by driving along the mean high water position of the beach in a 4-wheel drive vehicle. Shoreline position was sampled approximately every 5 meters using a Position Dilution of Precision threshhold on the GPS receiver of 4. The resulting differentially corrected file was exported to an ASCII format and converted from coordinates of Latitude/Longitude to Universal Transverse Mercator, Zone 18, North American Datum 1983. This file was converted into Arc/Info Geographic Information System Coverage format.
