Renaming quartz basalts of Cinder Cone, Lassen Volcanic National Park

Carlson K and Wheeler G. 1980. Renaming quartz basalts of Cinder Cone, Lassen Volcanic National Park. California Geology. 33(5):101

The petrography of lava flows from Cinder Cone were determined through six samples. Although they have been previously called "quartz basalts," before this paper, it has been unclear whether the name refers to a contaminated basalt or a basalt with quartz as an original part of the magma. Within this paper, it is recommended that the quartz inclusion of basalts be referred to as "quartz-xenocryst basalt." This is resulting from evidence that the quartz inclusions appear to be an origin from contamination of the parent basaltic magma through plucking from wall rock instead of deposition from siliceous waters or a vapor phase.
