Klamath Network July Mean Leaf Area Index (LAI)
Duff AA, Duff A, Duff AA. 2004. Klamath Network July Mean Leaf Area Index (LAI). Boston University and the University of Montana under contract with the National Aeronautic and Space Administration
This Dataset Consists of LAI (Leaf Area Index) and FPAR (Fraction of Photosynthetically Active Radiation) (MOD15A2) for July 2004 in the Klamath Network (LAI is in real units m^2/m^2, fill removed for mean). Data is an eight day average and files are named based upon the day of the year which is the first in the eight day average. Three granules were obtained, converted from HDF-EOS format into tifs and projected to UTM NAD83. Datasets were then masked to the modis mask. Data has a 1000 m spatial resolution. For this grid only four lai composites (with fill values removed) were added and devided by 4. For more information see the modis user guide in this directory or on the WWW at http://cybele.bu.edu/modismisr/products/modis/userguide.pdf. The MOD15 Leaf Area Index and Fraction of Photosynthetically Active Radiation absorbed by vegetation are 1 km at launch products provided on a daily and 8 days basis. LAI defines an important structural property of a plant canopy which is the one-sided leaf area per unit ground area. FPAR measures the proportion of available radiation in the photosynthetically active wavelengths (0.4 to 0.7 mm) that a canopy absorbs. LAI and FPAR are biophysical variables which describe canopy structure and are related to functional process rates of energy and mass exchange. Both LAI and FPAR have been used extensively as satellite derived parameters for calculation of surface photosynthesis, evapotranspiration, and annual net primary production. These products are essential in calculating terrestrial energy, carbon, water cycle processes, and biogeochemistry of vegetation.
