Depending upon the year of survey, one to eight routes were surveyed from early to mid-June. Each route consisted of 50 stops, located at 0.5 mile intervals along a 24.5 mile section of road. The observer recorded the number of individuals per species, heard or seen, during a 3 minute period. In 1998, landbird monitoring was done in conjunction with the Spruce Bark Beetle Project.
