Report of silversword census and status -- Oct 1962

Badaracco R. 1962. Report of silversword census and status -- Oct 1962. Haleakala National Park. Makawao, HI

Reports the results of a silversword census taken in October 1962 (following Lamb's 1935 methods). Estimates a total population between 8,000-10,000 (300-500 blooming). Notes a variety of animal and insect threats to seed germination, and observes that silverswords are themselves ill-equipped for seed dispersal. Restoration measures are suggested, including a census every third year, human-assisted seed dispersal, and further research into silversword ecology. Includes maps of survey areas and a chart displaying size distribution of silverswords at Ka Moa o Pele Cinder Cone.
