This dataset shows the retained properties that the park has acquired over the years from different private owners. This file contains the name of the property, ownership information, and UTM coordinates. Within the boundaries of the Maryland district of Assateague Island National Seashore there are 11 structures, commonly known as hunting lodges, that were purchased by the federal government from private owners beginning in the late 1960's. The hunting lodges are tangible evidence of the practice of wildfowl hunting on Maryland's Eastern Shore, a popular recreational pastime that grew out of the earlier need to hunt for food. With the establishment of the National Seashore in 1965, the property owners were given the option of retaining the rights to their properties for 25 years. As of 2006, all properties were owned by the National Park Service. Black Duck added to dataset in November 2005. Acquired by NPS in 2004.
