Dunes Drive at White Sands National Monument (WHSA), New Mexico

National Park Service, Intermountain GIS Program Office. 1998. Dunes Drive at White Sands National Monument (WHSA), New Mexico. Anne Poole

The dataset is an ARC/INFO coverage of the "Dunes Drive" roadway at White Sands National Monument (WHSA), New Mexico. The location of the road was acquired by digitizing this feature from the USGS 7.5' topographic quads "Garton Lake, New Mexico" and "Heart of the Sands, New Mexico." As the Dunes Drive enters the White Sands dunefield, the road surface changes from pavement to packed gypsum sand. The location of this transition was acquired using a handheld Magellan 4000XL GPS unit. Because of the shifting nature of the dunefield, the shape and position of the packed sand portion of the roadway has probably changed significantly since the publication of the USGS maps in 1982.
