This protocol describes the approach for monitoring the density of land birds in two prairie parks, Tallgrass Prairie and Agate Fossil Beds, using distance sampling with 5-minute counts. The protocol follows the recommended format that has been adopted by the NPS and USGS programs working with national parks, and includes Standard Operating Procedures for Training Observers, using GPS, establishing and marking plots, conducting the 5-minute counts, documenting habitat variables, data management, data analysis (including exporting data to the Distance Version 4 program), how to report the data, and procedures for modifying the protocol and archiving previous versions. The MS Access database follows the Database Template format and includes routines for summarizing data and exporting data to the Distance program. Instructions for using the database, summarizing data, and exporting data to Distance 4 are being developed by Steve Fancy.
