This shapefile contains boundaries for Proposed Recommended Wilderness, Proposed Potential Wilderness, and Non-Wilderness in Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area, Montana and Wyoming. This dataset is derived from the latest official NPS Wilderness Study based on careful study of roadless areas, public hearings, and written responses. This study was never forwarded to Congress, and no formal designation of Wilderness has occured. This dataset has been revised from the Wilderness Study map to adjust buffers along roads and utilities, account for changes to the boundary and land status, and reflect more accurate measurement available through new GIS technology. This dataset identifies 7,975.45 acres within Big Bend National Park as Proposed Recommended Wilderness (8,108 acres in the Wilderness Study), 0 acres as Proposed Potential Wilderness (0 acres in the Wilderness Study). The remaining 53,849.72 acres of the park were determined to be not suitable for wilderness designation or potential wilderness at this time.
