Wilderness Areas of Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, Arizona and Utah (Generated in 1999 for HR 3035-IH)
National Park Service, Intermountain Region GIS Support Office. 2002. Wilderness Areas of Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, Arizona and Utah (Generated in 1999 for HR 3035-IH). National Park Service Intermountain Region GIS Support Office
This dataset represents revisions to the National Park Service proposed general management plan (GMP) of July, 1979. The dataset is based on the drawing number 608/40,067A Apr. 1978. It was developed at the request of the Washington Office in 1999 to support Congressional bill HR 3035 IH. The 1978 map for Glen Canyon National Recreation Area was based upon careful studies of roadless areas, public hearings, and written responses to the proposals in the document. The map was never submitted to Congress. This 1999 dataset was developed in cooperation with park staff and modified the GMP proposal to adjust the buffers along roads, account for boundary and land status changes, and reflect more accurate area measurement available through new GIS technology. This dataset identifies 671,430.49 acres within Glen Canyon National Recreation Area to be considered for wilderness designation (588,855 acres in 1978), and 4,896.65 acres to be considered for potential wilderness addition (48,955 acres in 1978). The remaining 708,715.80 acres of the park were determined to be not suitable for wilderness designation or potential wilderness addition at this time. The difference in acreage calculations is due to the increased accuracy and associated error of recreating an analog dataset into a digital form using GIS technology.
