This shapefile contains boundaries for Suitable Wilderness land within Natural Bridges National Monument, Utah. Suitability was determined during the General Management Planning process, and applied wilderness criteria to roadless areas within the monument. The General Management Plan and Wilderness Suitability Assessment was developed with public involvement. The assesment has not gone onto the additional steps of a formal wilderness study with public hearings, a recommendation from the President to Congress, and no formal designation of Wilderness has occured. This dataset has been revised from the Wilderness Suitability map in the GMP to adjust buffers along roads and utilities, account for changes to the boundary and land status, and reflect more accurate measurement available through new GIS technology. Land added to the boundary after the Wilderness Suitability Assessment has not been studied for wilderness. This dataset identifies 5,123.36 acres within Natural Bridges National Monument as Suitable Wilderness (5,340 acres in 1995). The remaining 2,242.81 acres were determined to be not suitable for wilderness designation or potential wilderness at this time.
