This shapefile contains boundaries for Designated Wilderness and Non-Wilderness in Petrified Forest National Park, Arizona. This dataset is based on the map identified in the law enacting wilderness for the park. The date of enactment is 10/23/1970. The map is #NP-PF-3320-C of November, 1967. The Congressionally Designated Wilderness is based on careful study of roadless areas, public hearings, and written responses. This dataset has been revised from the map to adjust buffers along roads and utilities, account for changes to the boundary and land status, and reflect more accurate measurement available through new GIS technology. The 1967 map and the legal description dated December, 1970, create an administrative management zone between the park boundary and the wilderness boundary of 1/8 mile. This approach was abandoned by the NPS in 1973, eliminating the buffer zone. This dataset reflects these changes. This dataset identifies 52,549.36 acres within Petrified Forest National Park as Designated Wilderness (50,260 acres in 1967). The remaining 41,489.20 acres of the park were determined to be not suitable for wilderness designation or potential wilderness at this time.
