This shapefile contains boundaries for Recommended Wilderness, Designated Wilderness, Potential Wilderness, and Non-Wilderness in Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado. This dataset is derived from the latest official NPS Wilderness Recommendation which was transitted from the President to Congress on 5/11/1978, but never enacted. The official Wilderness Recommendation is based on careful study of roadless areas, public hearings, and written responses. This dataset has been revised from the official map to adjust buffers along roads and utilities, account for changes to the boundary and land status, and reflect more accurate measurement available through new GIS technology. Land added to the boundary after the 1978 recommendation, except for the Indian Peaks Wilderness land, has not been studied for wilderness. Since the 1978 recommendation, land on the south boundary was added from the United States Forest Service and was transfered as part of the existing Indian Peaks Wilderness. This dataset identifies 229,129.29 acres within Rocky Mountain National Park as Recommended Wilderness (240,030 acres in 1978), 28.02 acres as Potential Wilderness (248 acres in 1978), and 2,943.87 acres as Designated Wilderness. The remaining 29,163.48 acres were determined to be not suitable for wilderness designation or potential wilderness at this time.
