Wilderness Areas of Zion National Park, Utah (Generated in 1999 for HR 3035-IH)
Zion National Park, Resource Management & Research, GIS Program. 2002. Wilderness Areas of Zion National Park, Utah (Generated in 1999 for HR 3035-IH). National Park Service, Zion National Park
This shapefile contains boundaries for Recommended Wilderness, Potential Wilderness, and Non-Wilderness in Zion National Park (ZION), Utah. This dataset is derived from the latest official NPS Wilderness Recommendation which was transmitted from the President to Congress on 5/11/1978, but never enacted. The official Wilderness Recommendation is based on careful studies of roadless areas, public hearings, and written responses. This dataset has been revised from the official map to adjust buffers along roads and utilities, account for changes to the boundary and land status, consider private water and mineral rights, and reflect more accurate measurement available through new GIS technology. This dataset identifies 139,267.51 acres within ZION as Recommended Wilderness (120,620 acres in the original 1978 document). This dataset also identifies 5,546.25 acres as Potential Wilderness (10,364 acres in the original). The remaining 3,202.06 acres of the park were determined to be not suitable for wilderness designation or potential wilderness at this time. The difference in acreage calculations is due to the increased accuracy and associated error of recreating an analog dataset into a digital form using GIS technology.
