2006. NCPN Inventory, Bats, CANY. Northern Colorado Plateau Network, Inventory and Monitoring Program
This dataset describes the findings from the 2004-2005 Canyonlands bat inventory. Researchers conducted the inventory for bat species in all three units of Canyonlands, focusing on high-priority sites such as water tanks, pools and other water features where bats were likely to occur. The primary collection method was mist netting at 28 sites in the park, from all three units: The Needles, The Maze, and Island in the Sky. For the two year effort, this resulted in the capture of 1,717 bats of 14 of the 17 species believed to occur at Canyonlands. Acoustic surveys using a bat detector and listening for audible calls, from an additional six sites, provided the documentation for an additional two species. Researchers also visited selected museums to examine specimens of bats from Canyonlands to confirm identifications. As a result of these efforts, the inventory confirmed the presence of 16 species of bats known to occur in the park. The work was completed by Dr. Mike Bogan, USGS-Albuquerque, NM.
