In 2000, the USGS-BRD in Moab prepared reptile and amphibian master lists for each NCPN park unit. These lists contained species that were known or suspected to occur in park units based on habitats and range distributions. An I&M herpetofauna inventory was then conducted in eleven NCPN parks, though BLCA and CURE were not included in this effort. After this initial inventory was completed, the master lists were updated and revised during NPSpecies certification in March 2004. Because there were many unknowns in the data for BLCA and CURE, a second inventory was initiated for these two parks. Geoffrey Hammerson, a research zoologist with NatureServe, conducted the inventory during June and August of 2004. Surveys were primarily done on foot, walking through suitable habitat and microhabitat likely to support species occurring in the region. Road surveys were also conducted. Hammerson documented 11 species: 2 amphibians and 9 reptiles from 174 survey points. The plateau lizard (Sceloporus undulatus) was the most commonly detected species; other common species were tree lizards (Urosaurus ornatus), sagebrush lizards (Sceloporus gracious) and western terrestrial garter snakes (Thamnophis elegans).
