Report on sediments in Mammoth Cave, Kentucky
Davies WE and Chao EC. 1959. Report on sediments in Mammoth Cave, Kentucky. United States Geological Survey. Washington, DC
Seventy-seven samples of cave sediments in Mammoth Cave, Crystal Cave, Salts Cave, and Great Onyx Cave (Mammoth Cave National Park) were collected in 1953, 1956, and 1958. Fifty-two samples of surface soils (above or adjacent to the cavern system area; in channels or embankments of surface streams on the Pennyroyal Plain draining towards the cave system; alluvial sediments of the Green river; Big Clifty sandstone on the Mammoth Cave plateau and its saprolite and residual soil of the limestone). Detailed stratigraphic measurements were made of each of fifty sections and section positions plotted on large-scale maps of the cave. Laboratory studies of the physical characteristics and mineralogy of the cave fills were performed to establish criteria for correlation within the fills.
