The West Observation Well is used to monitor groundwater levels of the Arbuckle-Simpson aquifer. Chickasaw National Recreation Area, originally known as the Sulphur Springs Reservation, was established in 1902 to protect both freshwater and mineralized springs in the vicinity of the City of Sulphur, Oklahoma. Two observation wells are located in the park, the East and West Observation wells. The West Observation Well was drilled in 1972 to monitor water levels in the Arbuckle Simpson aquifer, to identify potential impacts due to the Sulphur well field, and to better understand how water levels in the aquifer are related to discharge from Buffalo and Antelope springs. Water levels were measured periodically (approximately four times per month) between 1974 and 1986, and infrequently after 1986. In June 2003 a transducer was installed and continuous water levels were collected and processed by NPS until April 2011 when USGS took over groundwater monitoring at this location.
