The station was established on August 17, 1999 by the NPS WRB to administor the United States' Federal reserve water right for instream flows in the North Fork of the Big Hole River. The North Fork of the Big Hole River is located in the southwest corner of Montana surrounded on three sides by the Continental Divide. Remnants of a beaver dam occur approximately 200 feet upstream of the vertical staff; beaver activity impacts water surface elevations and flow at the station. A stage-discharge rating was developed to help in administering the United States' Federal Reserve water right for instream flows of the North Fork of the Big Hole River. The period of use for the right is November through March for 10 cubic feet per second.
