Gable C and Stevenson S. 2013. Gaging Station Data and Reports - Death Valley National Park, Texas Springs in Furnace Creek Wash #362727116501401, 1990-2008. Water Resources Division, Water Rights Branch
The NPS established the station in 1978 to monitor the discharge of Texas Springs, to identify trends in spring flow, and to detect effects of groundwater pumping on discharge. Texas Springs discharge from Paleozoic-age carbonates at the base of the Funeral Mountain range near the mouth of Furnace Creek Wash. Springs in this area are generally associated with faults, which are mostly obscured at the surface by unconsolidated gravel deposits. Discharge is fed by the regional Death Valley ground-water flow system. Texas Springs discharge is collected in a horizontal tunnel dug into the Furnace Creek Wash alluvium. Discharge was historically diverted to the Texas Springs campground and to the irrigation system of the U.S. Borax and Chemical corporation. Historical photographs show that prior to development within the park, water discharging from Texas Springs flowed down Furnace Creek Wash and supported extensive riparian habitat. Discharge is monitored at Texas Springs to evaluate long term trends and identify potential changes in discharge associated with ground-water development. WRB discontinued processing records following WY2008. Death Valley NP personnel continues to monitor the site.
