Initial Assessment of Burn Severity on 2004 NPS Alaska fires (YUCH NOAT)

National Park Service, Alaska Regional office. 2009. Initial Assessment of Burn Severity on 2004 NPS Alaska fires (YUCH NOAT). U.S. Geological Survey

Initial assessment burn severity dataset for fires occuring in Alaskan National Parks and Preserves in 2004. Initial Assessements were completed for the Edwards Creek fire, Nation River fire and Woodchopper fire in Yukon-Charley Rivers National Preserve and the the Uvgoon Creek fire, Sisiak Creek fire, Poktovik Creek fire, Nakolik fire and Eli River 1 fire in Noatak National Preserve. The initial assessment burn severity datasets were generated by applying the Normalized Burn Ratio to pre- and post-fire Landsat imagery. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has entered into a cooperative agreement with the National Park Service (NPS) to deliver satellite imagery and derivitive products centered on major fires that impact national parks and other federal lands. This data set was compiled at the request of a federal land management agency and is part of a suite of products generated for a specific fire. See the National Burn Severity Mapping web site at: http://edc2.usgs.gov/fsp/severity/fire_main.asp Monitoring Trends in Burn Severity (MTBS) is a multi-year project conducted through a partnership between the USGS EROS and the USDA Forest Service Remote Sensing Applications Center (RSAC). It is designed to consistently map the burn severity and perimeters of fires across all lands of the United States for the period spanning 1984 through 2010. MTBS is based on image processing and analysis methods currently utilized by the USGS and USFS for existing post-fire burn severity mapping efforts. The USGS Landsat Thematic Mapper image archive will provide a consistent and continuous source of 30 meter resolution data going back to 1984 for mapping burn severity of all fires greater than 1000 acres in the west and 500 acres in the east (east of 97W longitude).
