This data set is a digital soil survey and generally is the most detailed level of soil geographic data developed by the National Cooperative Soil Survey. The information was prepared by digitizing maps, by compiling information onto a planimetric correct base and digitizing, or by revising digitized maps using remotely sensed and other information. This data set consists of georeferenced digital map data and computerized attribute data. The map data are in a soil survey area extent format and include a detailed, field verified inventory of soils and miscellaneous areas that normally occur in a repeatable pattern on the landscape and that can be cartographically shown at the scale mapped. A special soil features layer (point and line features) is optional. This layer displays the location of features too small to delineate at the mapping scale, but they are large enough and contrasting enough to significantly influence use and management. The soil map units are linked to attributes in the National Soil Information System relational database, which gives the proportionate extent of the component soils and their properties. The SSURGO soils survey data for Yosemite National Park (released in May of 2006). The soils data was based on 453 pits and then created via heads up digitizing using aerial photography and vegetation changes to delineate soil boundaries. The soil survey project leader responsible for finalizing the project is Kerry Arroues, located in Hanford, CA (559-584-9209 x113). The data had the name "soil_ca790" and comes with spatial and tabular data. Download from the NRCS Soils website at: http://soils.usda.gov/ To get the geodatase setup correctly, you must import the data into the MS Access template database that is provided as part of the download (e.g. "soildb_CA_2002.mdb"). The Readme text file will explain how to get the information to do the import. This has been done for the Yosemite soil survey -- use the soildb_CA_2002.mdb geodatabase for all tabular data. To get general soil series type for the soil map units, join the DBF file "mapunit.dbf" to the shapefile's attribute table using the MUKEY field as the join field. This is the soil survey soil types exported from the geodatabase. There is also a Soil Data Viewer that can be downloaded from the NRCS website to allow easy viewing of the data using many algorithms. In the Access database, use the Design view to look at how the relationships are set up. Minimum mapping unit: for Yosemite Valley it was 1 acre; for the rest of the park it was 40 acres.
