Miscellaneous roads [likely incomplete] mapped on Long Island, Blue Hill Bay, Hancock County, Maine during initial easement inventory 1995-96. Coverage contains arc feature classes. "This cover contains trails/roads found on the island during field work in fall 1995 & summer 1996. Buffalo were present on the island during this field work and are major trail builders and upkeepers. Some of the trails kept open by frequent use by buffalo may quickly be overgrown with vegetation after the buffalo are removed from the island. [ed.note: bison were removed from the island in approx. 1998] Trails were GPSed by walking the trail and collecting a series of points [editors note: presume he meant GPS positions, not point features] joined into a line feature. These trail lines were then generated into a GIS cover after differential correction. Getting satellite information in heavily wooded areas often proved difficult. In these areas, I used a higher PDOP mask and a lower SNR mask. Some of the trails were GPSed twice to verify accuracy [editors note: but features are not duplicated in this layer]. In PCArc/Info, trail lines were edited to remove 'scattered points' if they were present. This was not necessary for most lines. All trails that were found during field work were added to this cover. One trail in the middle of the eastern shore was observed during field work but we did not have time to walk and GPS its length. During the next field trip to the island, we were unable to re-locate this trail despite extensive searching and again were not able to GPS its length. The short beginning of this trail is included in the file (the only trail on the middle shore of the eastern side). In addition, the old overgrown trail that used to (we assume) run from the north end of the island to the south end was partially visible at some places of the island.
