Travertine Springs discharge from Paleozoic-age carbonates at the base of the Funeral Mountain range near the mouth of Furnace Creek Wash. Springs in this area are generally associated with faults, which are mostly obscured at the surface by unconsolidated gravel deposits. Discharge is fed by the regional Death Valley ground-water flow system. Travertine Springs is actually a collection of spring orifices that discharge through the coarse-grained deposits in the Furnace Creek Wash alluvium. Discharge was historically collected from a series of ditches and trenches and conveyed in a concrete flume to Furnace Creek Wash. Travertine Springs support riparian habitat and wetland plant species, including saltgrass, cattail, arrowweed and mesquite. Discharge is monitored at Travertine Springs to evaluate long term trends and identify potential changes in discharge associated with ground water development. WRB discontinued processing records following WY2008. Death Valley NP personnel continue to monitor the site.
