This is a pilot study which begins long-term studies on the changes in the biological communities next to the Herring River in Wellfleet, Massachusetts. Dramatic changes have occurred in this watershed system during the 1900's due to human modification. As additional vegetation data is gathered and historical data is found, a better understanding will form of these changes and their causes. Preliminary information suggests that the combination of restricting tidal influxes of saltwater while also increasing runoff of freshwater through extensive ditching and dredging of the marsh-creek system has resulted in a decrease in salt marsh vegetation and conversion of freshwater wetland vegetation to communities dominated by old field species.
