This report on big game status on the Alaska Peninsula covers brown bears, caribou, moose, and wolves. Its purpose was to provide the Alaska Board of Game with historic perspectives and current status (as of 1984) on these species in Game Management Unit 9. The Alaska Dept. of Fish and Game recommended that 1) spring and fall bear seasons be maintained under the current alternate regulatory year system and that season length and timing be adjusted as appropriate for long-term sustainable yield; 2) consideration be given to relaxing hunting regulations for the Northern Peninsula Caribou Herd due to its increased population; 3) bear numbers not be manipulated to benefit moose; and 4) no change be made in wolf management.
