Overpopulation of elk has resulted in widespread deterioration of winter range in the Yellowstone River drainage of Yellowstone National Park and has made control of elk numbers an important problem. Statistical information on the size of the herd, population trend and expected increase has often been inadequate for the planning of a satisfactory control problem. Consequently, the National Park Service made a comprehensive quantitative study of reproduction and survival of elk in this herd. Data pertaining to prenatal phases of reproduction are covered in this paper.
