This report provides details on the role of Redwood National Park staff geologists in the planning and executing of erosion-reduction measures during construction of the 12-mile Highway 101 Bypass at Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park. It explains the unstable nature of some of the affected area, and impacts of the highway design and construction methods. Emergency aid was also provided when advice to winterize construction areas was ignored, and heavy rains initiated large earthflows and sediment input to Prairie Creek. Another aspect of work by the geologists was planning for and supervising restoration of abandoned logging roads isolated by the highway.
