Research areas were designated in ten parks, including Lassen Volcanic National Park by the Wildlife Division of the National Park Service. The research areas were defined being similar to a primitive area, with the additional stipulation that no fish culture would be permitted. Trail and fire protection endeavors, and action against insect infestation were acceptable. Research areas were deemed as such also because they were inaccessible to roads, although backcountry hikers would not be denied accessibility. Another stipulation was that the established research areas would be of pristine conditions except where the original condition was modified through natural causes. Four areas in Lassen Volcanic National Park were deemed as research areas. (1) "Area along north boundary, north and east of Prospect Peak," (2) "Area on Lost Creek, northeast of Chaos Crags" (3) "A strip....from summit of White Mountain to Warner Valley Ranger Station on Hot Springs Creek, (4) "a portion of the Devastated Area on Hat Creek."
