Research at Last for Yellowstone Bison

Yellowstone National Park is to receive funding from the federal government for a long-overdue research program into the management of its bison population. The increase in funding has been prompted by a lawsuit brought against the park by the state of Montana and by controversial shootings of hundreds of bison that wandered out of the park in search of forage. Both the shootings and the lawsuit were related to fears that cattle in Montana could be infected by the bison-borne bacterium Brucella abortus. The new management research program will receive $900,000 over 3 years from the park service and a further $1.28 million over 5 years from the U.S. Geological Survey.
