This progress report notes that monitoring of construction effects on Brown Creek began with installation of automatic stage recording equipment in early 1990. The study was prompted by concern for sediment added to the creek during construction of the Highway 101 Bypass (Redwood National Park, California). Subsurface sediment samples were taken initially, and later measurements document subsequent infiltration of clean gravel by fine sediment. Initial conclusions from information collected to that point show over 19 metric tons of fine sediment deposited on the bed surface [area not indicated in the Conclusions] and only slow removal by streamflow. The author estimates 14-15 years would be needed for complete removal unless winter weather patterns changed. Attached to the report are about 18 pages of sediment concentration data sheets for the two study reaches.
