Responses of elk (Cervus elaphus) and mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) to wildfire: changes in utilization and migration patterns [Final report]

Conley W, Sivinski RC, White GC. 1979. Responses of elk (Cervus elaphus) and mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) to wildfire: changes in utilization and migration patterns [Final report]. CX7029-7-0057. Bandelier National Monument. Los Alamos, NM

This study documents habitat use by elk (Cervus elaphus) and mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) following the La Mesa Fire of 1977 at Bandelier National Monument, NM. Utilization patterns of burned and unburned areas of the park by elk and mule deer were determined by fecal pellet group plots. Radiotelemetry was used to find seasonal migration and densities for elk. Lists of species frequencies of ground cover in the plots is included. Appendix II is a 33 page master's thesis by R. Sivinski titled 'A multivariate analysis of summer habitat partitioning between elk and mule deer in Bandelier National Monument, New Mexico'.
