This study, Phase I of a two part investigation, identifies potentially useful restoration techniques for removing unnatural coatings from cave surfaces (gypsum) in the Snowball Dining Room in Mammoth Cave, Mammoth Cave National Park. Food preparation, humidity and temperature changes contributed to the black deposits on gypsum and other surfaces where fungal mycelium was also found. The map shows general airflow directions in Mammoth Cave. Tests determined that lightly spraying a 5.25% sodium hypochlorite solution on cave surfaces would oxidize and thus destroy the coatings.
