An embayment at the mouth of Redwood Creek in Redwood National Park has been recognized as critical to chinook salmon and steelhead trout using the creek for reproduction. Modifications to this area, beginning with a flood control project in the mid-1960's, have severely damaged the habitat, and this paper discusses means of restoration. Controlled breaching can be used to protect adjacent private lands simultaneously with providing some of the necessary habitat for the young fish. It includes a pair of comparison photographs from 1948 and 1978, a drawing showing existing conditions at the estuary and the location of the proposed restoration project, drawings of embayment formation and flood gates proposed for the south levee, and population estimates/total lengths for juvenile chinook salmon during the three months they typically spend in the slough before entering the ocean.
