Partial Abstract: During a 17-month period beginning July 1972, 318 shoreline ponds werelocated and surveyed in the five land districts of Hawaii Island's leewardcoast. The survey concerned an inventory of environmental and biologicalcharacteristics for the purpose of assessing their scientific and naturalresource values. This inventory includes all coastal waters--from excavatedwells and small fissures to large Hawaiian fishponds--that are not part ofthe marine ecosystem. Relevant information on geology and terrestrialvegetation is presented. Collectively, the ponds have distinctive environmental features:rocky (lava) basins, usually with biogenic sediments; mostly small (lessthan 100 sq m surface area) and shallow (less than 1 m deep); mixohalinewater (average salinity 7°/oo) representing an inland extension of theoceanic water table diluted by subsurface freshwater runoff; and tidalfluctuation of surface level.
