The purpose of this lower Escalante River survey was "to begin gathering baseline biological information on the more remote sections of this unique watershed." The section on invertebrates includes abundance information for the 19 taxa found and tables of related statistics; this is the first study of macroinvertebrates in this part of the river, so is important in providing baseline data. The researchers also examined composition of three distinct fish communities, relative abundance, and changes since earlier investigations. Of the 11 fish species found, 2 had not been reported before in the drainage. The Middle Canyon area sustains a surprisingly intact native fish community. The report's third main section gives amphibian results. Although 5 species were reported earlier, only the Woodhouse toad was found, possibly because the survey occurred at the end of the breeding season. The three sections also include methods and maps, observations, tables or graphs with field data and analyses, and recommendations for inventory and for monitoring.
