The paper presents a summary of the Redwood National Park revegetation program for rehabilitation of logged areas in the Redwood Creek basin. It describes specific techniques used in different phases of the program, showing the evolution of methods as results were evaluated. Later plantings almost exclusively used nursery-grown seedlings, especially native redwood and Douglas-fir in recent work. Plantings by early 1989 amounted to 750,000 trees. Successful tree establishment and growth is aided by compost, physical site preparation, and straw mulch. The authors urge record-keeping and monitoring, and make suggestions. This description of the park's restoration program may be useful to other similar projects.
